Marginal Quality Computer, TERRIBLE Service July 12, 2010 Justin H I bought my Lenovo G550 in November 2009 and was quite satisfied with the quality initially. I understood that it was a cheap computer and did not expect anything other than functioning machine.
br /Before a month of ownership was up, the computer was having problems running excel and word at the same time and would freeze for a minute at a time or even shut the programs off. The dvd player is of very poor quality, but that didn't bother me because I bought a computer, not a dvd player. All in all I was satisfied with my purchase but would probably have bought a different computer had I had the chance again.
br /In early April I had an incident in which a very small amount of liquid was spilled onto the computer keyboard (=1 oz). The computer immediately crashed and it's function was extremely limited after that (did not charge, no internet, system slowed down). This is not why I dislike this computer, I know it was my fault.
br /I then sent the computer to Lenovo for service and received an email in early May confirming their reception of my machine. In about a week, the problem was diagosed and I confirmed a $300 repair charge and told that my computer would arrive the next week. 2 weeks later I called for a status update and was told that no work had been performed and was assured that it was top priority and I would receive it the following week. The following week I called again and was again told that nothing had been done and it would be completed soon. Another week and no computer, so I called a third time and found out that again no work was done. My order was now 'escalated' to level 2 and I requested that it be overnighted when complete, as I had been without my computer for over a month now and was told that the techinician could not guarantee my reasonable request..
br /I received the computer the following week and found that my request for overnight had been denied. I opened the package and booted up the computer to find that the internet was still not working. Furthermore, the computer crashed after 20 minutes of troubleshooting. I called service again and insisted oon talking to a supervising technician, with whom I spent 2 hours on the phone to no avail.
br /For my trouble, Lenovo sent me a free external hard drive to backup my information and use the 'one-key recovery,' a feature which Lenovo boasts about frequently.
br / 2 weeks later when I received the external and tried the recovery, it failed within 30 seconds of starting. No the computer is completely useless.
br /I called immediately and requested a disc to restore Windows, and was told that I would receive it in a week. 2 weeks later no disc. I called and found out they once again took no action and had no record of my request, but assured me that it would go out this time. It has been months and I still do not have my computer fixed.
br /The price of this computer includes the service of the Lenovo staff and at this point I feel like I should be paid for my hours on the phone with their staff. As a quality assurance engineer, I'm well aware of what to expect from a company in terms of service and competence, and Lenovo has totally boned me.

I'm just a casual user, so I wanted a cheap laptop that works faster than the one I bought 5 years ago. For under $500, I got a laptop that works and works pretty well.
br /Pros -
br /Has a number pad if you need to input data.
br /Shiny!
br /Windows 7 instead of Vista.
br /More RAM and hard drive space than my older computers combined.
br /~4 hours of battery life.
br /3 USB ports
br /
br /Cons -
br /Shiny, but screen can reflect a little too much sometimes so it's hard to see at certain angles.
br /Keyboard has a tendency to double letters or drop letters sometimes. Never had this problem on my old laptop (Dell Inspiron 6000), and I just checked to make sure I have the newest drivers.
br /Mouse pad can be unresponsive sometimes, which annoys me to no end. Also not a problem I had on the old laptop.
br /Facial recognition program tells me to take my glasses off before I use it. How stupid does that sound to someone who is blind as a bat and NEEDS those glasses? (Only a minor con as I don't really care about the security. My friend has a laptop with a fingerprint scanner, which is more fun, but infinitely stupid unless you wear gloves when you handle your computer.)

Over the course of my college years, I have access to a few laptops, including this lenovo G550. It has very solid construction quality and runs very fast for normal use (e.g. office and web). It's quiet, looks cool, and has a nice screen. I would recommend this to any one who wants a solid laptop without paying an arm and a leg.

I ignored these reviews after checking with customer service.

br /But...
br /1) CPU is not Core 2 Duo. Its Dual Core.
br /
br /2) OS is Windows XP (which i don't mind), but i don't see Windows 7 installed.
br /It did come with Windows 7 Recovery CD though.
br /
br /3) The laptop material is not fragile though. Body seems ok.
br /
br /4) Before buying the laptop, i had confirmed with customer service on CPU and OS. But they refused to put the confirmation on their ticket (so, now i can't hold on what they had confirmed to me before)

br /**** Customer Service really needs to improve in informing/understanding laptop specs. ****
